Cerebral contusions are a form of a traumatic brain injury. They are bruises in the brain that can cause swelling. The bruises are caused by micro-hemorrhages (small blood vessel leaks in the brain tissue). They are mostly found in cortical tissue, which are the areas that are near sharp ridges on the inside of the skull. The areas that are most affected from this injury are the frontal and temporal lobes. Contusions occur in either coup or contre-coup injuries. Coup injuries occur directly underneath the site of the impact. While, contre-coup injuries occur on the opposite side of the area that was impacted.
Cerebral contusions are caused by a blunt force to the head. This can cause swelling and bleeding in the brain where the head was struck. 20-30% of traumatic brain injuries are cerebral contusions. Some contusions can be minor with little damage to the brain. Minor injuries usually just heal on their own. If the injury is very severe, the injured person is usually unconscious after the traumatic blow. Some symptoms include.... - headache - confusion -numbness - sleepiness/dizziness - nausea/vomiting - memory problems - loss of ability to understand speech - emotional and attention problems - seizures - loss of motor skills Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXYsQgkVOr0 |
